Technological Eve

Going off today to meet up with my Nancy Drew Used Book-Providing Friend.  She has another bunch from the thrift store where she volunteers.  I am having way too much fun reading these.

Eve is getting impertinent.  That goes without saying.  Curious Dennis is in a perpetual state of readiness.  Lu and Murmur are still trying to figure out why they are so socially inept and have no identity except for their relationship with Eve.  Eve’s father is trying hard to stay out of prison.

The old books spend so much time having Nancy and her pals using pay phones and leaving messages.  I cannot imagine how my stories will literally fly off the page when they use cell phones for calling people, tracking people through the woods, or uploading their adventures right to YouTube.  They can also have flashlight applications downloaded so they will never be stuck in the darkness.  And….if they are stumbling around for just the right word, the Merriam Webster dictionary is readily available.  It’s a whole new world in terms of sleuthing.  They can even download sound effects to thwart the evil people by making them think there are ducks or barking pinschers in the near vicinity.  The possibilities are endless.

Technology moves on. I have a similar problem with Sue Grafton books. No cell phone, no computer. She’s still stuck in the 1980’s, and a PI in that decade would have had a car phone…

  2. Hmm… but without the time-honored time-killers of pay phones and leaving messages and waiting no *gulp* SNAIL MAIL – how are you ever going to stretch out the story to a respectable length? 😉
